New Zealand Terrestrial & Freshwater Biodiversity Information System (TFBIS). Find out more...

Haere Mai! Welcome!

This site provides information on New Zealand soil and litter invertebrates, their diversity, biology, ecosystem role, and conservation status. All pages are illustrated with photographs of living animals.

If you already know the name of the group you are looking for, click on the Quick Guide listing (see the column on the left) to read the description and look at illustrations for the NZ representatives. Each Quick Guide page includes the description of an invertebrate group, the introduction to its biology and classification, and the links to the web resources and the Image Gallery. When available, we included information about the distribution and ecology of the animals, and a list of scientific references for New Zealand.

Please read How to Use this Site below for further information. The site was designed to be of interest to all nature lovers, students, and professional scientists; we assume that the user of this site has been exposed to basic biology.

How to use this site

Read the NZ Soil Fauna for the overview of soil and litter invertebrate biodiversity in New Zealand.

The illustrated Identification Key is a simple way to identify your own soil and litter animals on an introductory level - use it with the help of Image Gallery.

The Image Gallery contains hundreds colour photographs of live soil and litter invertebrates from New Zealand. Each photograph is accompanied by the record location where the animal was found, the type of the habitat, and the taxonomic information (if available).

The Collections page gives advice on the techniques for collecting and preserving soil invertebrates. This section also provides links to major New Zealand Invertebrate collections.

The people and funding agencies contributing to the Guide, and the way to contacting us can be found in the About section. All materials in the Guide are copyright - the terms of use and disclaimer can be found in Terms and Conditions.
